World Cup 2018 Changes the Game as CBD Ban is Removed

CBD is no longer banned for World Cup players.

With the 2018 World Cup in full swing there are some striking changes to the program. Beyond the controversial absence of the USA team, this year’s cup is made even more memorable. The Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) – an body responsible for the control of doping in international sports – has removed cannabidiol from the banned substance list. Being a marijuana derivative this is the first time in World Cup history any weed-related substance is being allowed on the field. However, CBD is the only cannabinoid that can be consumed. Other cannabis derivatives such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) remain banned.

a game-changing move?

Despite the prior belief that CBD could be dangerous to athletes’ health. the general consensus seems to have changed. Indeed, the World Health Organization (WHO) has referred to CBD as “generally well-tolerated with a good safety profile”. It consists of a wide variety of medicinal properties and research has supported its benefits. These benefits include, but are not limited to; anti-inflammatory, pain relief, anti-spasmodic, and antioxidant rich. In fact CBD contains more vitamins than whole fruits and vegetables. Further bodily benefits include; neuroprotectant, anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, stress relief and anti-tumoral. Since CBD oil is 100% natural, these properties make CBD a benefit to professional players. It provides a natural solution to their problems whilst playing multiple high-intensity games.

The world of professional sports has been sceptical on the use of CBD due to its relation to THC. However, recent attention to CBD has led researchers and scientists to create a clear distinction between the two. Although closely related, CBD and THC elicit different natural effects. Despite both being the two most prominent cannabinoids found in cannabis. Cannabis is the plant genus that includes both hemp and marijuana. THC is associated with the high derived from smoking cannabis whereas CBD is non psychoactive. This makes its use less troubling.

This is a big change in the world of football. CBD has not yet been unbanned in Sports leagues like MLB and NFL. But if you are interested in this change, check out more information on CBD here on our website!
